JKN Expands into Maritime Security and Counter Terrorism Training
Charlottetown - - Recently, Holland College signed a letter of intent with International Maritime Security Network (IMSN), a US-based security company dedicated to combating maritime terrorism. Through this relationship, the College’s Justice Knowledge Network, Marine Training Centre, and Atlantic Police Academy will work with IMSN to deliver new and existing training opportunities to the international maritime industry.
IMSN is an international full service security company that delivers IMO-certified (International Maritime Organization) training, consulting, and hard security services to clients around the globe. While joint initiatives at the Marine Training Center and the Atlantic Police Academy will focus on practical, hands-on exercises, at JKN, work is already underway to identify new online training opportunities for the maritime security market.
“The demand for maritime security and counter-terrorism training is on the rise globally,” says Capt. Larry Wilkinson, CEO of IMSN. “The opportunity to tap into JKN’s extensive experience for online training gives the industry as a whole a significant jump-start on what will be a core component of training for years to come.”
As the leading provider of online training for police and law enforcement in Canada, JKN is also eager to expand into the maritime security industry. “JKN has invested years of research and development to creating an effective online environment for police and law enforcement,” says Sandy Sweet, Executive Director of JKN. “We’re now ready to apply that knowledge and technology to new sectors. Given IMSN’s knowledge and expertise, they are an ideal partner to explore and implement new opportunities within the maritime industry.”
With the Canadian Police Knowledge Network, JKN established a proven model for delivery of online police training initiatives. Though still in the planning stage, a similar model, featuring a secure access portal with a catalogue of courses on maritime security, anti-piracy, and counter-terrorism, will be put in place for the maritime industry. The first courses are expected to be available in late 2009.
