Conducting on-going Security Drills and Exercises
is a required element of the ISPS Code, but even more importantly is a
vital part of any serious regimen designed to test and evaluate the
preparedness of shipboard and port facility security personnel.
Conducting this type of training by "in house" personnel, however, can sometimes limit both the actual level of security preparedness and the objective evaluation of that security preparedness.

A sample of areas that can be evaluated are as follows:
Controlled and uncontrolled access points to your ship or port facility.
Attentiveness and proficiency of security personnel at controlled access points, with specific attention being given to:
Personnel's ability to adequately check identification and reason for boarding ship or entering facility
Proper use of screening procedures
Ability to effect communication with senior security personnel or other personnel who would respond to a security incident
Knowledge of who to communicate with regarding questions or concerns about persons seeking to board ship or enter facility - chain of command
Use of any passwords or other security checks employed
Overall security awareness of non-security personnel
Evaluation
of preparedness and procedures followed in response to various "staged"
security incidents or "staged" increases in security level, with
detailed comparison to procedures found in your Ship or Port Facility
Security Plan
Security measures in place for restricted areas and response to breaches therein
Ability
to coordinate security measures between ship and port facility security
personnel and other entities who may respond to a security incident,
(i.e., captain of the port, harbor security, sheriff, police, and fire
departments, emergency medical care, etc.)
